Becoming Our Best

"PREPARING FOR OVERLOAD"

Nearly everyone I know is operating either at capacity or in some form of overload. It's as if we have been exposed to a virus and the whole civilization is vulnerable to it: An epidemic of too much to do and too little time.

As most of you know, I assist people with problems in business. Many times I'm called in when it's late and the issues are in crisis. That means it will take more time, effort and money to get a resolution. So it always seems best to prepare to meet a problem early on rather than wrestle with it when it becomes huge.

So how could you prepare to deal with the problem of overload? Here are some thoughts:

• Leave some space in your busy schedule for unexpected events.

• When the unexpected presents itself, take a deep breath and decide what its priority is. Some things can be postponed, others can't.

• Be ready to delegate. If you see something coming which your colleagues could be responsible for, give them a "heads up" or some kind of advance notice.

• Do one thing at a time when overload occurs. Being surrounded by half-finished projects slows production and makes a person feel very fragmented.

It appears that we are all expected to do more, in less time than ever before. Each new electronic device or assistant helps us do the job faster, rather than giving us time to think, reflect and be creative.

Overload will come. Prepare for it and make your life more livable. And don't forget to reserve spaces in your life for self, family and friends Otherwise the important things in life will pass us by.
